Don’t Hire a Tree Service Until You Ask These 10 Questions
Your trees are one of the most valuable assets on your property. They provide shade, increase your home’s value, and are an essential part of the Southwest Florida landscape. Yet, many homeowners unknowingly put them at risk by hiring the first person who shows up with a chainsaw and a pickup truck. The tree care industry is notoriously under-regulated, meaning the burden is on you, the homeowner, to vet your service provider.
To protect your property and your wallet, here are 10 essential questions you must ask before you let any tree service begin work.
The 10-Point Vetting Checklist
“Can I see your proof of insurance?”
This is the most important question. A reputable service must carry both General Liability insurance to cover property damage and Workers’ Compensation insurance to cover injuries. If they don’t have both, you could be held liable for accidents. Ask for the certificates and verify them with the insurance provider.
“Are you ISA-Certified?”
As we’ve discussed, ISA Certification is the gold standard. It proves they have the knowledge to care for your trees properly, not just cut them down.
“Can you provide a detailed, written estimate?”
A verbal quote isn’t enough. A professional estimate should clearly outline the scope of work, the techniques to be used, and the total cost. This prevents surprise charges later.
“What is your plan for protecting my property?”
How will they avoid damage to your lawn, your home, or your landscaping? They should have a clear plan for lowering large limbs and cleaning up debris.
“How will you perform this specific pruning cut?”
This is a great way to test their knowledge. Ask them to explain how they will make a cut on a large branch. They should mention terms like “branch collar” and using a “three-cut method.” If they can’t explain it, they don’t know the science behind proper pruning, as detailed in our Tree Pruning Primer.
“Do you have a list of references?”
A company that does good work will be proud to share the names and numbers of satisfied customers. Check these references!
“What safety standards do you follow?”
Do their team members wear helmets and other personal protective equipment (PPE)? Do they follow industry safety standards (ANSI Z133)? A crew that doesn’t prioritize safety is a major red flag.
“How long will the project take, and what does your cleanup process involve?”
This sets clear expectations for the project timeline and ensures you won’t be left with a yard full of debris.
“What happens if there is unexpected damage?”
Even with professionals, accidents can happen. Their answer should refer back to their insurance policy and a clear process for remediation.
“Will you be using spikes to climb my trees?”
Climbing spikes should ONLY be used on trees that are being removed. Using spikes on a tree that is being pruned creates unnecessary wounds and can open the door for pests and disease.
The Bottom Line: Trust, But Verify
A professional, trustworthy tree care company will not only have good answers to these questions but will be happy you’re asking them. It shows you’re an educated homeowner who cares about their property. Be wary of anyone who is dismissive or can’t provide clear answers.
