What to Expect During a Tree Health Assessment

It’s Not a Quote. It’s a Consultation.

Many homeowners think the first step in any tree care project is to get a “free quote.” At Joshua Tree Inc., we believe that’s starting in the wrong place. A quote without a diagnosis is just a guess. That’s why our process begins with something far more valuable: a comprehensive Tree Health Assessment.

But what does that actually involve? It’s a systematic, top-to-bottom inspection of your trees and property, conducted by an ISA-Certified Arborist. Here’s a look inside the process.

The 7-Point Assessment Process

When our arborist arrives at your property, they aren’t just looking for things to cut. They are acting as a detective, gathering clues to understand the complete picture of your landscape’s health.

  1. The Site Evaluation First, we look at the big picture. We assess the overall conditions of your property. Are there signs of new construction that could have damaged roots? Is the property on a slope, affecting water drainage? Are the trees competing for sunlight?
  2. The Species Identification We identify the species of each tree on your property. A Live Oak has different needs and potential issues than a Royal Poinciana or a Black Olive. Proper identification is the foundation of any sound recommendation.
  3. The Root Collar Inspection A tree’s health starts from the ground up. We will inspect the base of the tree, looking for issues like girdling roots, soil compaction, or whether the tree has been planted too deep. These are common problems that a typical “tree guy” will completely overlook.
  4. The Trunk and Bark Analysis The trunk is the tree’s circulatory system. We examine the bark for cracks, cankers, fungal growth, or insect activity. These are often the first visible signs of an internal health problem.
  5. The Canopy and Leaf Examination Next, we look up. The density, color, and size of the leaves tell us a lot about the tree’s ability to photosynthesize and get the nutrients it needs. We look for signs of dieback, discoloration, or pest-related damage.
  6. The Structural Integrity Check This is where we put on our safety hats. We look for structural defects that could pose a risk to your property. This includes weak branch unions (co-dominant stems), cracks, and over-extended limbs. This is a critical step that our Tree Pruning Primer explains is essential for storm-proofing your trees.
  7. The Client Consultation and Goal Setting Finally, and most importantly, we talk to you. What are your goals for your property? Are you concerned about safety? Aesthetics? Privacy? Our recommendations are tailored to meet your specific needs and objectives, balanced with what is best for the long-term health of your trees.

The Deliverable: A Plan, Not Just a Price

At the end of this assessment, you won’t just get a piece of paper with a price on it. You will receive a prioritized action plan. We will tell you what needs immediate attention, what can wait, and—just as importantly—what is perfectly healthy and should be left alone.

This is the fundamental difference between an advisor and a salesperson. An advisor gives you the information you need to make an educated decision. A salesperson just gives you a price.
